CANNOT BUY MY SOUL TO AIR ON SBS

In 2006, a number of Australian artists recorded versions of songs by Kev Carmody, for what was to become the album Cannot Buy My Soul.

In January 2008, most of them, including Kev Carmody himself, came together at the State Theatre in Sydney for the stage production of Cannot But My Soul. By all reports, it was one of the most powerful and emotional concerts Sydney has ever heard.

On Saturday, October 4 at 10pm SBS will screen a documentary featuring the concert, including rehearsal footage and interviews with the performers involved. Directed by feature film maker, Paul Goldman (Suburban Mayhem), and produced by Toby Creswell and Danielle Kelly (producers of Great Australian Albums), Cannot Buy My Soul captures not only the intensity and lyricism of Kev’s songs, but also the goodwill and respect of the artists who gathered to honour his work. The cast includes Paul Kelly, Missy Higgins, Sara Storer, Dan Kelly, Tex Perkins, Clare Bowditch, Paul Kelly, The Herd, Steve Kilbey, Last Kinection, The Pigram Brothers, Glenn Richards from Augie March, Dan Sultan, The Drones and Last Kinection.

IN MY NAME

Missy is among a number of Oxfam Ambassadors who will take part in a global campaign called ‘in my name’ which will call on leaders to step up their commitments to reducing poverty as they review progress on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) at the UN Summit in to New York this Thursday.

In a video testimonial Missy has called on the Australian government to recognise the additional threat that climate change poses to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals, especially in our region.

“It is devastating that some of Australia’s neighbours – small island countries in the Pacific – are at risk of disappearing completely because of severe changes to their environment,” Missy Higgins said.

STAND UP AGAINST POVERTY

As an official Make Poverty History Ambassador Missy Higgins has pledged to take a public stand against poverty by supporting Make Poverty History during its 2008 ‘Stand Up Against Poverty’ campaign on 17 – 19th October.

STAND UP Against Poverty is a worldwide call to take action against poverty and inequality and for the Millennium Development Goals. People from all nations join together by hosting or attending events in their local community. At each event participants stand up together to symbolise their unity with millions of other STAND UP participants across the globe.

“It’s easy to take for granted the things our country has always known, like freedom, wealth and good health care. But globally speaking, we’re in the minority. As the lucky ones it’s our responsibility to stand up for those less fortunate than us. Join me on October 17th and stand up against world poverty!” Missy Higgins
